lyrics

there was a boy who couldn’t stay awake
his eyes were shut down low for that sake
the dirty room with tater sheets at night
and dentist teeth-cast nightlights for light

take it as it comes
take the letting go
till the stars on the ceiling barely glow
into the evening hours
out with the plague
in with the new

it’s as good a way as any I know to never wear shoelace,
or apple paste
and not eat birthday cake
all year

the televisor spangled till it snowed
his head swelled and flashed red like a toad
his hands and feet were turning into snakes
the laughing night gives more than it takes

naked as it comes
waking lets it go
to the moths in the closet eating clothes
into the morning hours
birthing the sun
making new holes

it’s as good a way as any I know to never wear shoelace,
or apple paste
and not eat birthday cake
all year

ruxpen and engines of fire and light
pennants and soldiers and pied piper kite
call him to come to the smoking pond
on to the great beyond
